Sushi, Gangnam Style, A Mexican Meal & Scorpions

Sushi, A Mexican Meal & Scorpions

Unrelated events by the way!

Well things are getting back to normal for us here after Semana Santa although it seems that it took its toll on a few local residents.

We said goodbye to our new friends Joe, Lisa & Blake (the family that we had stayed with for a few days) as they were heading back off to the States.

As a little farewell we went to 'Bamboo' a local restaurant and had sushi.  What is it with boys and chopsticks??

Ok, I take that back, some boys!

The presentation of the meal was lovely but I have to say that I can't recommend lettuce in sushi as its flavour is rather overpowering.  And yes, I know, we are in Nicaragua but one can but hope :)

Among other happenings over the last couple of weeks we had a Mexican meal with a group visiting from ... you guessed it 'Mexico' - the chef of the evening was Jairo and he showed me how to make a meat lovers mexican meal.  The name of the dish escapes me at the moment but it was yummy!

It seems that folk / line dancing is popular in Mexico so the girls taught our boys some dances (Chase watched from the kitchen) and then Kieran got them dancing gangnam style.

It was a lovely evening and a good time was had by all lol.

Unfortunately things didn't stay that way for Porl, later that night he got up to a barking dog and I woke up to shouts of pain from the lounge.  I rushed out expecting to see someone in the house attacking Porl but instead there he was hopping around holding his foot.  Although we didn't find it at the time it turns out that he was bitten by a scorpion which obviously hurts like mad, we figured that it must have been a scorpion because the sting felt like nothing he'd experienced before and a friend of ours had found a scorpion in their house the previous week.

It was a bit of a wait and see moment as neither of us had been bitten by scorpions before.  I had actually been talking about scorpions with our Mexican friends earlier in the week and a couple of them had been bitten by a scorpion.  They had told me that there's nothing that you can do other than rest and drink a lot of water. Not long after being bitten apparently the victim's tongue goes numb and they can't speak properly but that passes in about half an hour and that's the end of things.

I shared this little wealth of knowledge with Porl, put his legs up, brought copious amounts of water and waited to see what he would sound out with a numb tongue.  Luckily for him, (a little disappointing for me jeje) nothing happened and there was no change.

We thought that was the end of the scorpion saga but the very next day Porl went to put his trousers on, which had been in our suitcase, folded up and next minute he was leaping back out of them and sure enough he'd been bitten again on the leg by the scorpion.  He hit it with the fly spray and when he went off to find ice I found the creature and took it to the sink so that I could photograph it.  Unfortnately the sink didn't have any kind of filter, just the open pipe and away rushed the scorpion never to be seen again.

But out of interest this is what it looked like.

It looked pretty mean and was about 4 inches long.  As it turns out it's the ones with the big nippers that are the most harmless.  The ones with little nippers can be quite venomous apparently but generally this is the kind that they have in Nica and they're nowhere near as nasty as the Mexican ones.

But regardless, hopefully that will be our last close encounter with any kind of scorpion.
